Are Apple’s fortunes reversing in China?

For a long time, there wasn’t much good news for Apple in China. Things now seem to be changing.


Apple’s quarterly sales figures had become a running joke in our office.

Every quarter, I would write a report about them, highlighting the fact that, in China, there’d been bad news for the company again.

This, incidentally, was always true – but my boss started to joke that I wasn’t a fan of Apple products, as I only ever seemed to be covering bad news for the US tech giant.

It’s with some relief, then, that I can finally report a change in Apple’s fortunes in China. They’re not exactly in growth mode again yet (some analysts have described their most recent sales figures as ‘flat’) but there have been several stories that suggest that things are on the up.

Firstly, despite the fact that China is the third most expensive place in the world to buy an iPhone (in USD equivalent terms), sales of the latest models were surprisingly bouyant.

Apparently, Apple shipped 40 percent more mobile devices over the last quarter in China, when compared with the same period last year.

Most impressively, however, as our Editor EJ Ward reported on Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that the China specific version of the App Store has made developers more than £12.6bn. This equates to around a quarter of App Store sales globally.

The importance of China to Apple cannot be underestimated, and clearly they’ll be hoping that a growth in iPhone sales will serve to further increase app revenue in the country, too.
