Between penning bestselling books and writing scripts for critically acclaimed films, Yan Geling has a pretty packed schedule. So when we heard she was coming to London to open China Exchange’s China In Context Festival, it was just too good an opportunity to pass up.
Last year saw Yan Geling’s book Youth adapted for the big screen. The film was written by Yan herself and directed by Feng Xiaogang. Based on Yan’s extraordinary real-life experiences of performing in an army dance troupe in the People’s Liberation Army during China’s Cultural Revolution, it’s a story spanning some of China’s most tempestuous and rapidly-changing history from the 1960s to the 1990s.
