More Chinese than European students in UK
New statistics have shown that there are now more Chinese than European students in the UK.
The figures, of course, do not count British students as being European.
In total, there are now 66,415 Chinese studying in Britain, compared to 63,035 from other EU countries.
Analysis of applications for UK student visas showed that over a third of all such visas issued over the last year were to Chinese students.
However, when compared to students in the UK from other countries, those from China are statistically more likely to want to return home to work after their studies.
Encouraging them to stay might prove tricky. Firstly, it’s natural that they will want to return to China, which is not only home but also has the attractions of a booming economy and outstanding employment prospects.
Secondly, the UK is facing an uncertain future. Doubt over exactly what form Brexit will take continues to overshadow the British economy and fears are growing that a recession or slowdown could be on the horizon.
Workers are unlikely to be tempted by short term permissions and the inherent insecurity that they bring.
