China's Peking University and Tsinghua University have both been included in the top 30 of this year's Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
According to the latest list, released on Tuesday, Peking University has risen two places to joint 27th and Tsinghua University has jumped five spots to 30th, meaning Asia is now home to three top-30 universities for the first time in the table's 14-year history.
Both Chinese institutions have improved in terms of their reputation for teaching and research – two significant performance indicator areas among the UK-based magazine's ranking methodology system.
Another five mainland Chinese universities were also represented in the top 200, including Shanghai's Fudan University (116) and the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei (132), the capital of China's eastern Anhui Province.
The National University of Singapore is the top Asian university in joint 22nd place, alongside the University of Toronto.
Oxford and Cambridge took the top two spots in the 2018 rankings, while the California Institute of Technology, ranked first between 2012 and 2016, as well as number two last year, dropped to third place.
