Man fined €208,000 for trying to pass off veal for fruit at self-service till

The man was ordered to pay the fine, which was calculated based on his income, after trying to cheat the till to avoid paying €47 for veal liver.

Munich’s district court convicted the 58-year-old businessman of theft and based his hefty financial penalty on his monthly income of €24,000 (£21,000).

The man, who has not been named, is said to have a history of supermarket self-service fraud, having tried to cheat the system three times before.

He also has past convictions for theft and tax evasion.

The thief has now been released from jail, where he had been held since the incident in December.

Munich court spokesman Klaus-Peter Juengst said the defendant did not appeal the verdict, which was issued last month.

It is not clear which fruit the man tried to pass the meat off as.
