The royal engagement poises one very important question. Which designer will get the honour of creating Meghan Markle’s wedding dress?
Will she go with McQueen, like her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Kate Middleton the Duchess of Cambridge? Or, will the honour go to Anne Barge, who dressed Markle for her wedding scene in the American tv show, Suits? The bride will undoubtedly need to adhere to royal standards, but she’ll have every designer in the world at her feet, ready to help with the task at hand.

The royals are known for keeping their fashion secrets under wraps. Nevertheless, Markle is famed for her elegant and understated style, it’s likely this will feature in her choice of dress. In an interview with Hello! magazine, she hinted that she’d want her wedding dress to be “classic and simple”. She added, “I personally prefer dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic.”
Erdem is on the short-list, is not a shoo-in; the designer is one of Markle’s favourites. The brand’s SS18 collection has even been inspired by British fashion and the royals.
According to Erdem, the line imagines the young Elizabeth embarking on a secret, lifelong love affair with jazz.
In places, the straps that hold her dress up are loosened to reveal a shoulder. Elsewhere bras and bustiers are barely covered by bejeweled argyle and white jumpers. A jacquard dress, with a Prince of Wales check motif woven into it, has frayed hems, hand-embroidered with pearls.

Other trends for 2018 that may influence Markle’s choice include contemporary black accents a la Marchesa and off-the-shoulder bodices, as seen on the catwalk earlier this year. The low v necklines and cut-outs are doubtful, though. This is a royal wedding, after all.

Wedding planner extraordinaire, Natasha Corbin-Stewart, who has helped hundreds of brides plan their special day, believes Markle will be adventurous in her choice. She says:“I cannot wait to see the dress, I think she’ll go for something a bit different to McQueen. This might be a royal wedding with a twist.”
