Student union draws up fancy dress dos and don’ts guidelines

The Kent Union guidelines – revealed in the lead up to Halloween – also included dressing up as film producer Harvey Weinstein and television personality Caitlyn Jenner.

It said the list, leaked to the Canterbury Journal, aimed to ensure students’ “right to a safe space” by banning “offensive” costumes.

Also on the list were “the Crusades [sic], Nazi uniform, priests and nuns, cowboys and Native Americans, ISIS bomber, Israeli soldier and the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)”.

The union also advised against costumes “centred around political group stereotypes or the stereotypes of different levels of perceived class in the means to diminish their worth or validity. That means dressing as a chav is off limits (patronising to the working class), along with ‘Tories’.”

However, costumes permitted included “the United Nations” and ancient Greeks.

Kent Union told The Times the guidelines were a “draft proposal” and that it would “consult with our executive groups to gain further feedback”.
