“Companies – wherever they’re based – are not allowed to sell unsafe toys to children in the UK,” stated Suzanne Cater, a representative from Ofcom, as the regulator announced a series of fines against the controversial website 4chan.
The fines, totaling £450,000, stem from 4chan’s failure to implement age checks and assess the risks of users encountering illegal material. This decision follows an investigation that began in June 2025, prompted by numerous complaints regarding illegal activities on the platform.
In addition to the hefty fine, Ofcom imposed further penalties: £50,000 for not adequately assessing the risk of illegal content and £20,000 for failing to specify in its terms of service how users are protected from such content. 4chan now faces a looming deadline. The platform must implement age assurance measures by April 2, 2026, or it will incur a daily penalty of £500. Additionally, it has yet to pay £26,000 in penalties imposed by Ofcom from the previous October, raising concerns about its compliance and willingness to adhere to safety standards.
