What Happened
The Norwegian company EcoFishCircle AS (EFC) has signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hayal International Company LLC to establish a land-based fish-farming facility in Saudi Arabia. This facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 10,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon.
Why It Matters
This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aimed at enhancing the country’s role in sustainable aquaculture. EFC will utilize its Modular Recirculating Aquaculture System (mRAS), which promotes efficient water and energy use while minimizing environmental impact. EFC’s Chairman, Terje Mikalsen, emphasized the necessity of land-based solutions for increasing seafood production sustainably, a sentiment echoed by Saudi authorities.
What’s Next
The project, named Blue Oasis, will not only leverage EFC’s technological expertise but also its operational support. Hayal CEO Abdulrahm expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the potential opportunities it could unlock for both companies and the local aquaculture sector.
