What Happened
As of February 25, 2026, it is now mandatory for non-visa nationals traveling to the UK to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new regulation affects visitors from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and France. Airlines will prevent boarding for passengers who do not possess an ETA, eVisa, or other valid documentation.
Why It Matters
The introduction of the ETA aims to enhance the UK’s border security and streamline the immigration process. The ETA, which costs £16 and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, allows for multiple entries into the UK for short stays of up to six months. This initiative aligns with similar systems in other countries, such as the US ESTA and the forthcoming EU ETIAS.
What’s Next
From this date forward, eligible visitors must ensure they have obtained an ETA prior to travel. The UK government has issued over 13.3 million ETAs since the phased rollout began in October 2023. As the enforcement of this requirement takes effect, travelers without an ETA will be barred from boarding their flights to the UK.
