Wayve Secures $1.2bn Funding to Propel Robotaxi Launch

What Happened

Wayve, a UK-based leader in AI for autonomous driving, has successfully raised $1.2 billion in a Series D investment round, bringing its total funding to $1.5 billion and its valuation to $8.6 billion. This funding round was led by Eclipse, Balderton, and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from notable investors including Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Uber, as well as automotive manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Stellantis.

Why It Matters

This significant capital injection will accelerate Wayve’s transition from AI research to commercial deployment of its end-to-end AI platform. The funding is particularly crucial as Wayve prepares to launch robotaxi trials in London in 2026, in collaboration with Uber. This initiative will serve as a litmus test for the UK government’s new regulatory framework for driverless taxis, positioning Wayve to compete against established players like Waymo and Baidu’s Apollo Go.

What’s Next

Beginning in 2026, consumers will have the opportunity to experience Wayve-powered robotaxis through commercial trials with Uber. By 2027, Wayve plans to offer passenger vehicles equipped with its AI Driver, starting with L2+ ‘hands-off’ capabilities. This technology allows vehicles to steer, navigate, and respond to traffic under driver supervision, marking a significant advancement in autonomous driving.
