Bc: British Columbia to Adopt Permanent Daylight Saving Time by 2026

bc — GB news

British Columbia is set to adopt permanent daylight saving time, eliminating the biannual clock adjustments after one last “spring forward” in 2026.

The province announced it will implement a permanent, year-round daylight saving time following the clock adjustment of one hour on Sunday, March 8, 2026. This will mark the final time change in B.C. Residents and businesses will then have eight months to get ready for November 1, 2026, when clocks would typically fall back an hour but will instead stay the same.

Permanent Daylight Saving Time

RELATED TOPICS | Should the clock be adjusted or remain as is? The ongoing discussion about daylight saving time prevents states from making changes.

“Every parent understands that adjusting clocks twice annually creates considerable disruption in their already hectic lives. Residents of British Columbia have expressed that seasonal time adjustments are not suitable for them,” stated Premier David Eby. “This choice goes beyond just timekeeping. It aims to simplify life for families, minimize interruptions for businesses, and foster a stable, prosperous economy. I am optimistic that our American counterparts will soon follow suit in eliminating these disruptive time changes.”

As a result of the change, British Columbia’s new permanent time zone will be designated as Pacific time, positioned seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-7), which aligns with the current offset observed during daylight saving time.

Final Clock Adjustment in 2026

Authorities indicated that the change provides greater consistency, enhances community welfare, and minimizes biannual interruptions to the schedules of parents, shift employees, small enterprises, pet caretakers, and others.

The province indicated that the goal of abolishing the time change is to minimize disruptions for families, streamline scheduling, and offer an additional hour of evening daylight during the winter season.

It also mentioned advantages such as fewer interruptions to sleep cycles and daily activities, increased usable evening daylight during winter, decreased administrative workload for small businesses and service providers, and enhanced consistency for planning across transportation and technology sectors.

In 2019, British Columbia held a public consultation regarding time observance, attracting 223,000 participants, with 93% in favor of implementing year-round daylight saving time. The province noted that support among various industries and occupational groups exceeded 90%.

The legal structure that facilitated the transition, known as the Interpretation Amendment Act, was enacted in 2019; however, the government chose not to implement it immediately to align with neighboring U.S. states sharing the same time zone.

Ongoing Debate on Time Changes

The province indicated that “recent developments from the U.S.” have altered how B.C. manages its alignment on time zones, and that the regulations will implement the changes starting after Sunday, March 8, 2026.

The government announced plans to collaborate with organizations, small enterprises, and public-sector allies from March to November 2026 to facilitate the transition.

The province announced that Pacific time will be consistent with Yukon throughout the year. From November to March each year, it will coincide with Alberta and other areas that follow mountain standard time. Between March and November, it will align with California, Washington, Oregon, and other regions observing Pacific daylight time. The province indicated that Washington, Oregon, and California are “in the process of developing or implementing similar laws.”
