Spain Condemns US Military Actions

Spain has publicly condemned the recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, asserting that these operations violate international law. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been vocal in his criticism of the military intervention, emphasizing Spain’s stance on the matter.

In a significant development, the US has relocated 15 aircraft from its military bases in southern Spain. This move comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations, particularly regarding the use of Spanish military facilities for operations in Iran.

Former President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off all trade with Spain, citing the country’s refusal to allow the use of its military bases for attacks on Iran. “Spain has said that we cannot use their bases,” Trump stated, highlighting the friction in diplomatic relations.

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Manuel Albares reiterated the country’s position, declaring, “Spanish bases are not being used for this operation, and they will not be used for anything not included in the agreement with the United States.” This statement underscores Spain’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and adhering to international agreements.

Additionally, Spain has taken a firm stance against the conflict by refusing to allow vessels transporting weapons to Israel to dock in its ports. This decision aligns with Spain’s broader foreign policy objectives and reflects its opposition to the ongoing violence in the region.

Despite the tensions, trade relations between the US and Spain remain significant. In 2025, the US recorded a trade surplus with Spain of $4.8 billion, with exports amounting to $26.1 billion and imports totaling $21.3 billion. The economic interdependence between the two nations complicates the current diplomatic rift.

Spain is also known as the world’s top exporter of olive oil, a vital product in its economy, which could be impacted by any potential trade embargo. The Spanish government has expressed confidence in its ability to manage the situation, stating, “We have the necessary resources to contain the possible impact of the trade embargo by the US.”

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the implications of these diplomatic tensions on both military cooperation and trade. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term effects on Spain’s economic landscape and its relationship with the United States.
