Fire Breaks Out Near Glasgow Central Station
“I am deeply concerned about the fire near Glasgow Central Station tonight and very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding,” said John Swinney, expressing the urgency of the situation.
A fire erupted at approximately 3:46 PM on March 8, originating from a vape shop located on Union Street. The incident has led to significant disruptions in rail services, with Glasgow Central station closed until further notice.
More than 60 firefighters from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to combat the blaze, utilizing 15 fire appliances and 3 high-reach vehicles. Despite their efforts, the historic Forsyth Building, which dates back to 1851, has partially collapsed.
“Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained,” remarked local representative Paul Sweeney, highlighting the severity of the incident.
As a result of the fire, dozens of trains have been cancelled, prompting Avanti West Coast to advise passengers against traveling to or from Glasgow Central station. Some ticket acceptance measures have been implemented for Avanti West Coast passengers on LNER services.
Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties from the incident, according to a spokesperson from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who stated, “There are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and details remain unconfirmed.
The Forsyth Building, once a department store, has been repurposed into a mix of office and retail space, making its partial collapse a significant loss for the community.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
