Claerwen reservoir: Investigation Continues Following Discovery of Body at
Investigation into Unidentified Body
“We believe this is the best chance to identify the male as this image can be distributed throughout the UK and abroad in our efforts to identify him,” said Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting, who is leading the investigation into the unidentified man found at Claerwen Reservoir on October 17, 2024.
The body, discovered in the reservoir, was wearing a wetsuit and lacked any identifiable marks or additional clothing. Authorities estimate that the man had been in the water for up to 12 weeks before his discovery.
Described as being between 30 and 60 years old, the man stood approximately 6 feet tall and weighed between 202 and 220 pounds. The wetsuit found with him was sized XL, adding to the details that investigators are piecing together.
Detective Inspector Ponting noted, “It’s really unusual,” referring to the circumstances surrounding the case. The investigation has been ongoing for over 16 months with no significant leads, prompting the police to make public appeals and search medical databases for missing persons.
The facial reconstruction of the man was created using photographs, a post-mortem report, a forensic dental report, and a CT scan. This reconstruction is crucial for identifying the man, especially given his unusual dental pattern identified as an open bite.
Professor Caroline Wilkinson, involved in the forensic analysis, remarked, “Forensic cases are always really sad,” highlighting the emotional weight of such investigations. She added, “If they need our help, it generally means that it’s a difficult case to identify.””>
The cause of death remains unconfirmed after an inconclusive post-mortem, and it is still unclear how the man ended up in the reservoir. The police have utilized a low-flying helicopter, drones, and officers scouring the water’s edge in their search efforts.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain hopeful that the facial reconstruction will lead to the man’s identification, allowing them to provide answers to any potential family or loved ones.
