Sarah Vine has recently brought attention to her lifelong struggle with androgenic hair loss, coinciding with a significant ruling that classifies severe female hair loss as a ‘disability’. This ruling allows for specialized wigs and hair systems to be VAT-exempt, marking a pivotal moment for many women facing similar challenges.
Vine, who is currently 58 years old, has been open about her condition, notably appearing on ITV’s This Morning without her wig. She has suffered from hair loss since the age of 43, a situation that worsened after the birth of her son, William. For 15 years, she concealed her hair loss before deciding to speak publicly about it.
Throughout her journey, Vine has undergone a lengthy treatment process involving drugs and painful injections aimed at promoting hair growth. Despite these efforts, she eventually transitioned to using wigs, having relied on an integrated hair system for almost two decades prior. This system, provided by specialist Lucinda Ellery in London, allowed her to engage in daily activities without the worry of her hair system coming off.
Currently, Sarah Vine owns three wigs, including two made from human hair, which cost around £1,400 each, and one synthetic wig priced at £380. The integrated hair system significantly boosted her confidence, allowing her to feel more like herself.
Vine has expressed her initial reservations about wigs, stating, “I thought wigs were embarrassing and very possibly unhygienic.” However, she has since embraced them, emphasizing the importance of clever styling. “Now, when I catch sight of myself in a shop window, I don’t see a frumpy, middle-aged, well-past-her-sell-by-date old bag; I see a rather sassy brunette with a cheeky bob,” she remarked.
Her candid discussions aim to de-stigmatize hair loss, as she believes that sharing her story can help others feel less alone. “I want to de-stigmatise this condition and if talking about it helps, great,” she stated.
