Tt: Recent Developments in : Bio-LNG Trial and the Passing of Peter Padgett
Recent Developments in TT
In recent years, the expectations surrounding environmental sustainability in maritime transport have been evolving. Prior to the latest developments, TT-Line was exploring various alternatives to reduce its carbon footprint, but the full implementation of bio-LNG was still in its trial phases.
On March 9, 2026, a significant milestone was reached as TT-Line and Everllence concluded a year-long bio-LNG trial on Baltic Sea ferries. The vessels ‘Nils Holgersson’ and ‘Peter Pan’ successfully operated on bio-LNG throughout 2025, marking a decisive shift towards more sustainable practices in the industry.
The bio-LNG used in this trial is sourced from agricultural waste in northern Europe, demonstrating a commitment to utilizing renewable resources. Notably, replacing one tonne of fossil LNG with bio-LNG results in a reduction of 2.75 tonnes of CO2 emissions, underscoring the environmental benefits of this transition.
Andreas Schaerli, COO of TT-Line, remarked, “With the use of climate-neutral bio-LNG, which is obtained from waste materials, TT-Line is making a decisive contribution to climate protection on the Baltic Sea.” This statement reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing climate change.
In a contrasting development, the motorcycle community mourned the loss of a legendary figure, Peter Padgett, founder of Padgett’s Motorcycles, who passed away at the age of 94. Established in 1958, Padgett’s Motorcycles became renowned for its involvement in motorcycle racing, particularly in the Isle of Man TT since 1971.
Padgett’s Motorcycles initially began as a Yamaha dealership and expanded to include Honda and Suzuki, cementing its status in the motorcycle industry. The announcement of Padgett’s passing was met with heartfelt tributes, with the company stating, “It is with an extremely heavy heart that today 9th March 2026, we said goodbye to our founder Mr. Peter Padgett.”
The Padgett family echoed this sentiment, stating, “There’s only one Peter Padgett!” highlighting the unique legacy he leaves behind in the world of motorcycles.
In the realm of competitive cycling, Filippo Ganna recently showcased his prowess by winning the opening stage time trial of Tirreno-Adriatico. Ganna completed the 11.5-kilometre course in 12 minutes and eight seconds, finishing 22 seconds ahead of his teammate Thymen Arensman.
Ganna’s victory marks his fifth stage win in Tirreno, a testament to his consistent performance in the sport. He expressed his appreciation for the achievement, stating, “It’s stage win number five for me in Tirreno and every time is special and complicated to do my best.”
These developments in TT highlight a juxtaposition of progress in environmental sustainability with the loss of a significant figure in motorcycle history, reflecting the dynamic nature of the community.
