Jack Colback Announces Retirement
Jack Colback has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The former midfielder, who made a remarkable 480 professional club appearances, shared his decision with fans and the media.
In his statement, Colback expressed, “Today, I’m announcing my retirement from professional football. I feel privileged to have the honour of playing nearly 500 matches at the top level, representing some of the biggest clubs in the country in Newcastle, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Queen’s Park Rangers.” His career included significant stints at Sunderland, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest.
Colback’s career highlights include 135 appearances for Sunderland and 102 for Newcastle United. He also made 189 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 9 goals and providing 11 assists throughout his time in the top flight.
During his tenure at Sunderland, he was part of the squad that reached the Carabao Cup final in the 2013-14 season. Later, he contributed to Newcastle United’s Championship title win in the 2016-17 season.
Colback joined Nottingham Forest initially on loan before making a permanent move in 2020. Most recently, he played for Queens Park Rangers, where he made 53 appearances after joining the club in the summer of 2023.
Reflecting on his journey, Colback stated, “There have been highs, lows, promotions, tough defeats, and moments I’ll never forget. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and supporters who helped me to achieve my dream. Looking forward to what the next chapter holds.”
Colback began his career with Sunderland, where he had a pair of loan spells with Ipswich Town before completing a free transfer to Newcastle United in 2014.
His career also included a brief call-up to the senior England squad in August 2014, although he withdrew due to injury. He was capped once by England’s under-20s in 2009.
As Colback steps away from the pitch, observers are left to consider his contributions to the clubs he represented and the impact he had on the game.
