Nicky Henderson’s Success at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival

The 2026 Cheltenham Festival commenced on March 10, 2026, with great anticipation as approximately a quarter of a million spectators gathered for the event. The opening race, the Skybet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, is a significant Grade One race covering 2 miles and 87 yards, setting the tone for the festival.

Nicky Henderson, a prominent figure in horse racing, celebrated a notable achievement when his horse, Old Park Star, won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. This victory marked Henderson’s sixth win in this prestigious opening race, further solidifying his legacy at the Cheltenham Festival.

Old Park Star, who was the 15-8 market leader, was expertly ridden by Nico de Boinville. The horse secured victory by a length and a half over Sober Glory, with Mydaddypaddy finishing closely behind in third place, just a nose away from Sober Glory.

Following the race, Henderson expressed optimism for Old Park Star’s future, especially in light of the recent retirement of his previous star, Constitution Hill. He remarked, “On a day we’ve said goodbye to Constitution Hill (over jumps), it’s nice to come straight in and bring on a new one we hope could be a star.” This sentiment reflects Henderson’s ongoing commitment to nurturing new talent in the sport.

The top four finishers in the race were all trained in Britain, showcasing the strength of British horse racing. Henderson’s long association with the Cheltenham Festival, which began in 1986, has seen him achieve numerous victories, making him a respected figure in the racing community.

Joint-trainer Johnson White, who was involved with Sober Glory, expressed his disappointment at finishing second, stating, “I couldn’t be more delighted with the run, obviously very disappointed to finish second.” Meanwhile, Dan Skelton, trainer of Mydaddypaddy, praised the performance of his horse, saying, “It was an almighty run from a five-year-old, I couldn’t be prouder of the horse.”

As the festival continues over its four-day span, the excitement surrounding Henderson’s latest victory adds to the rich history of the Cheltenham Festival, where both established and emerging talents compete for glory.
