Anthony Russell Huntley, 43, has been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland, following a violent incident that occurred on February 26, 2026. Ian Huntley, who was 52 years old, was serving a life sentence for the notorious murders of ten-year-old Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.
Immediate Circumstances
The attack on Huntley took place in a workshop within the prison, where he was assaulted with a metal bar. After the incident, Huntley was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was taken off life support on March 6, 2026, after his condition deteriorated significantly.
Anthony Russell was imprisoned in 2022 after a seven-day killing spree that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. He was found guilty of three counts of murder and three counts of robbery, receiving a whole-life order, which ensures he will spend the rest of his life in prison. His previous victims included David Williams, whom he strangled on October 21, 2020, and Julie Williams, David’s mother, whom he murdered just days later, inflicting 113 injuries. He also raped and murdered Nicole McGregor on October 26, 2020.
Official Statements
Christopher Atkinson from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.” Judge Mr Justice Wall described Russell as an ‘exceptionally dangerous’ and manipulative man, highlighting the severity of his past crimes.
Russell is scheduled to appear at Newton Aycliffe magistrates’ court via video link on March 11, 2026. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments in the case.
