Roger Speed Passes Away
Roger Speed has passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a significant legacy in Welsh football. He was known not only as a devoted supporter of the sport but also as the father of former Welsh footballer and manager Gary Speed.
Gary Speed, who tragically took his own life in 2011 at the age of 42, earned 85 caps for Wales and had a distinguished club career, playing for teams such as Leeds United, Everton, and Newcastle United. He was a dynamic left-sided midfielder, participating in 841 matches and scoring 135 goals at the club level.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) expressed their sadness over Roger Speed’s passing, describing him as an “incredible supporter of Welsh football.” The FAW highlighted that Roger’s support and passion for the game will always be remembered.
Roger Speed was also an Honorary Patron of Connah’s Quay Nomads, a club that paid tribute to him following the news of his death. In their statement, they noted, “It is with great sadness that the club has overnight learned of the passing of the great Roger Speed who was an Honorary Patron to the club and long-time supporter as well as the father of legendary Welsh player and Manager, Gary Speed.”
Gary Speed’s achievements in football included winning the League Championship with Leeds United in 1992, and he is fondly remembered for his contributions to the Welsh national team.
Roger Speed’s family includes his wife Carol and their children, who are likely to feel the profound loss of a beloved father and supporter. Carol Speed remarked on the importance of understanding mental health, stating, “I think it’s a fantastic idea. We didn’t know that Gary was struggling; people don’t always know what’s going on in people’s minds.”
As tributes continue to pour in, the impact of Roger Speed on Welsh football and his family’s legacy remains a poignant reminder of the sport’s deep connections.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any memorial services or further tributes planned in his honor.
