A10 warthog: A-10 Warthog Operations Intensify in the Strait of Hormuz
In a significant escalation of military operations, the U.S. has deployed A-10 Warthogs to the Strait of Hormuz as of March 19, 2026. This move comes in response to increasing threats from Iranian naval forces, with U.S. Central Command confirming the aircraft’s active role in countering Iranian boats.
The A-10 Warthog, known for its close air support capabilities, is now being utilized to target fast-attack watercraft in the region. General Dan Caine stated, “The A-10 Warthog is now in the fight across the southern flank and is hunting and killing fast-attack watercraft in the Straits of Hormuz.” This deployment is part of Operation Epic Fury, which has already seen U.S. forces destroy over 120 Iranian vessels and 44 mine layers.
Equipped with a GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm cannon and capable of carrying up to 70 mm APKWS II laser-guided rockets, the A-10 is designed for precision strikes on small, fast-moving targets. Its ability to loiter for extended periods allows it to effectively engage threats in a dynamic maritime environment.
Despite its traditional association with land missions, the A-10’s maritime role has been emphasized in recent operations. The U.S. military’s strategy reflects a growing recognition of the aircraft’s versatility. Dan Grazier, a defense expert, remarked, “The longer the A-10 exists, the more impressed I am with that aircraft.”
As the situation evolves, the U.S. military is exploring new options to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, including the possibility of a ground incursion. This reflects the high stakes involved in maintaining freedom of navigation in this critical waterway.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact locations from which the A-10s are operating, and future plans for the aircraft’s retirement and its ongoing role in the Middle East remain unclear. The A-10’s deployment marks a pivotal moment in U.S. military strategy in the region, highlighting the ongoing tensions with Iran.
