Alastair Campbell called out by daughter live on air for ‘calling women birds’

Mr Campbell was standing in for Nigel Farage on his LBC phone-in radio show, when Grace rang in to question some of his behaviour towards women.

The 25-year-old writer and filmmaker told her father he needed to “unpick” certain behaviours in order to “truly be a feminist”.

As her father laughed nervously she slammed him for “still calling women birds”, and continued: “If you truly want to be a feminist, women aren’t birds, birds are birds, they fly, women can’t fly.

“You call women women, you don’t call them birds.”

Mr Campbell pulled a confused-looking face and said: “OK, I don’t remember calling them birds but I promise not to do that again.”

The former Downing Street press secretary later threw his hands behind his head as Grace challenged him for not doing jobs around the house.

She said: “I’ve noticed what you do, which a lot of men do, they make up the excuses of ‘I can’t’.

“Instead of saying you can’t, just learn how to.”

Mr Campbell said he was “very impractical”, adding: “Anything else you want to tell your dad off for?”

His daughter ended by telling him “if you really want to be a feminist you need to be able to talk about periods”, adding that “periods are a natural thing”.

Mr Campbell replied: “I came to your period poverty protest at Number 10.”

Grace continued: “If I tell you I’m going to change my tampon you kind of grimace and cover your ears.

“They’re two different things, supporting that, but being able to talk about periods like they’re a normal thing that happen to women, they’re not disgusting.

“This is a big thing for the whole period conversation now.”

She added: “You’ve got to educate yourself on things, it’s work, you’ve got to really do that and really want to properly be a feminist.”

Mr Campbell continued: “I’m not bad for 61, Grace I’m not bad for 61.”

Grace replied: “No you’re good.

“I think you don’t give yourself enough credit.

“But what I’m saying is that there is a difference between being a feminist and believing in equality.”

Her father ended the call by joking about his daughter’s lack of football knowledge.

He said: “I now want to educate you in football, you couldn’t even name three current Burnley players could you?”

Grace responded saying she didn’t see what political point that made – before Mr Campbell closed the call by saying: “Alright Grace, okay, stop nagging me.”
