The 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of A. A. Milne’s beloved stories. In celebration of children’s literature and creativity, the BBC has been running the 500 Words competition, which encourages young writers to express their imaginations.
Recent Developments
In a recent development, Alex Jones hosted a special episode of The One Show dedicated to this year’s 500 Words competition. The event highlighted the extraordinary creativity of children, who submitted over 46,500 entries from across the UK.
The competition recognized outstanding young writers in two age categories. The Gold Winner for the 5-7 age group is Zuren Zhang, while Maya Ukwubiwe took home the Gold for the 8-11 age group. Additionally, the Silver Winners were Muhammed-Da’oud Khan for the younger group and Ariadne Elena Livas for the older group. The Bronze Winners included Harry Hart and Annalise Ikeasomba.
Her Majesty The Queen expressed her hope that participants enjoyed the competition, stating, “I hope that you have enjoyed taking part in 500 Words and that doing so has helped you to discover a secret…that reading and writing are the best fun ever!”
Cerys Griffiths remarked, “Every year, BBC 500 Words reminds us just how extraordinary children’s imaginations are.” Sara Cox praised the winner Zuren Zhang, saying, “I think we can all learn from that, so well done Zuren.” Jodie Whittaker added, “It was incredible. I think it’s one of those amazing stories that not only have you read it, I think everyone in this room feels like they’ve seen it.”
Looking Ahead
As the competition continues to inspire young writers, observers anticipate that it will play a significant role in fostering a love for literature among children. The recognition of these young talents is expected to encourage more participation in future editions of the competition.
