Amazon Prime Video Faces Enhanced Regulation Under New UK Media Act

What Happened

Amazon Prime Video, along with other major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, will come under enhanced regulation by the UK media regulator, Ofcom. This new regulatory framework, part of the Media Act 2024, mandates that these services adhere to the same standards as traditional broadcasters, including the BBC and ITV.

Why It Matters

The implementation of these regulations aims to strengthen protections for audiences, particularly children and vulnerable groups, by ensuring accurate and impartial news and safeguarding against harmful content. Ofcom will have the authority to investigate viewer complaints and impose fines of up to £250,000 or 5% of revenue generated in the UK for breaches of these regulations. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, emphasized that this move creates a level playing field for the industry and supports the UK’s vibrant media sector.

What’s Next

As part of the new regulations, video-on-demand services with over 500,000 UK viewers will need to comply with Ofcom’s content rules. This shift reflects changing viewing habits, with a significant number of households now subscribing to streaming services rather than traditional TV channels. The government is expected to finalize the secondary legislation soon, impacting how these platforms operate in the UK.
