Amazon Vega OS Fire TV: A New Era for Streaming Devices

“Starting with Fire TV Stick 4K Select, all future Fire TV Sticks will run on Vega.” This announcement from Amazon signals a pivotal change in how users will experience streaming content.

Vega OS, Amazon’s in-house operating system, is designed specifically for its Fire TV devices. Unlike its predecessor, Fire OS—which was built on Android—Vega is constructed directly on Linux. This shift offers a more streamlined performance but comes with notable trade-offs. For instance, the new operating system does not support sideloading of apps. So, if you were hoping to install your favorite third-party applications, you might need to rethink your strategy.

Amazon has been developing Vega OS for years. It initially tested the platform on Echo Show smart displays before bringing it to the Fire TV lineup. The first device to showcase this new system was the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which launched in October 2025. Since then, the new Fire TV Stick HD—released in April 2026—has followed suit.

The transition to Vega OS introduces some significant changes for users. Currently, around 3,000 apps are available on the Amazon App Store for Vega devices, a stark contrast to the approximately 40,000 apps available on Android-based Fire TV sticks. This smaller library could limit options for users who rely on specific applications for their streaming needs.

Yet, there are some advantages to this new system. Vega OS is less demanding on hardware—making devices like the Fire TV Stick HD slimmer by 30% and faster by over 30% compared to previous models. However, it’s essential to note that while these devices may look sleek and perform quickly, they lack support for advanced audio and video formats like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

In an attempt to bridge the app gap created by this transition, Amazon is streaming some Android-based Fire OS apps in the cloud on Vega OS devices. This move aims to ease user frustration while they adjust to the limitations of the new operating system.

As Amazon continues to roll out these changes across its product line, developers face a new landscape as well. With all future Fire TV Sticks committed to running on Vega, they must adapt their applications accordingly—ensuring compatibility and optimizing performance on this cloud-based platform.

Details remain unconfirmed about how well users will adapt to these changes or how developers will respond in the long term. But one thing is clear: Amazon’s transition to Vega OS marks a significant evolution in its approach to streaming technology—and it’s only just begun.
