Amelia Vanderhorst Convicted for Graffiti on Public Sculpture

In a case that has stirred emotions in Mount Gambier, South Australia, 20-year-old Amelia Vanderhorst was recently convicted of graffiti after she attached googly eyes to the public sculpture known as Cast in Blue. This sculpture, which was unveiled last July, has sparked mixed opinions among local residents, reflecting the community’s divided sentiments towards contemporary art.

The incident occurred during a night when Vanderhorst consumed MDMA and three litres of vodka, leading to her impulsive act of defacing the artwork. The Mount Gambier City Council, which had invested A$136,000 in the creation of Cast in Blue, reported spending nearly $3,000 on restoring the sculpture after the incident.

As a result of her actions, Vanderhorst was ordered to pay $2,000 AUD in compensation and complete 60 hours of community service. Local mayor Lynette Martin expressed her disapproval of the act, stating, “People don’t have to like it, but they don’t have to be creating wilful damage in this way.” Her comments highlight the importance of respecting public art, regardless of personal opinions.

Initially, Vanderhorst had launched a crowdfunding campaign to secure legal representation but later cancelled it, perhaps reflecting a shift in her approach to the situation. The charge against her was originally categorized as property damage but was amended to a graffiti charge, emphasizing the legal system’s perspective on her actions.

In the wake of the conviction, Vanderhorst’s representative, Michael Hill, stated that she is committed to making better decisions moving forward. This sentiment suggests a desire for personal growth and accountability in the aftermath of her impulsive choice.

As the community processes this incident, it remains to be seen how it will impact local perceptions of public art and the responsibilities that come with it. Observers are keenly watching how Vanderhorst will fulfill her community service and whether this experience will foster a deeper understanding of the value of public artworks in their community.
