Amy Winehouse fans divided as hologram tour is announced

Mitch Winehouse, the late singer’s father, said the recreation of his daughter was set to embark on a world tour accompanied by a live band and backing singers.

He said the virtual reality project allowed “new generations” to discover the Back To Black singer’s music.

However, some are not convinced by the idea.

“I didn’t know her personally but I saw her documentary (it really impacted me) and I’m pretty sure she’d find this kind of ridiculous,” said one Twitter user replying to Mr Winehouse’s announcement.

Another asked: “Who’s actually attending these hologram tour shows? Who’s the reason they keep getting booked? I need answers. I just heard an Amy Winehouse hologram tour is in the works. #ButWhy.”

A third added: “Oh that’s just wrong.”

But some were positive about the move.

“OMG this is so exciting!!! I never got the chance to see Amy preform live, I would do anything to see her preform, how magical!,” wrote one fan.

Another added: “There’s an Amy Winehouse hologram about to go on tour I’ve literally wanted this for YEARS.”

Speaking at the Dorchester Hotel in London at the Amy Winehouse Foundation’s annual gala, Mr Winehouse said the family “felt ready to bring Amy’s incredible talent back to the spotlight”.

He added: “We experienced first-hand how these hologram shows celebrate great artists. This is a wonderful way to bring focus back to her musical legacy, as well as raising funds for the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

“It’s time to remind everyone that Amy was one of the great musicians and performers.”

The project will be run by Base Hologram, the Los Angeles-based firm which previously toured holograms of singers Maria Callas and Roy Orbison.

The Winehouse hologram will launch towards the end of next year.

Brian Becker, founder and chief executive of Base Entertainment and Base Hologram, said: “Amy was a powerhouse in every sense of the word.

“She played by her own rules, pioneered her own sense of style of music and because of that we know she is the perfect person to headline this type of project.”

The star – known for her hits Rehab, Love Is A Losing Game and Tears Dry On Their Own – died at the age of 27 in 2011 after a long battle with drink and drugs.
