Azerbaijan Accuses Iran of Drone Attack

On March 5, 2026, Azerbaijan reported a drone attack in Nakhchivan, an autonomous exclave that borders Iran and Turkiye. The attack, which struck an airport and a school, resulted in injuries to two individuals. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev condemned the incident, labeling it an ‘act of terror’.

In the wake of the attack, President Aliyev demanded an apology from Iran, stating, “The Azerbaijani state strongly condemns this ugly terrorist act, and those who committed it must be immediately held accountable.” Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the drone strikes and called for a clear explanation from Iran.

Iran, however, has denied any involvement, with Iranian officials asserting that the Islamic Republic has not targeted Azerbaijan. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, emphasized that Iran does not engage in hostilities against its neighboring countries.

The tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran have historical roots, particularly regarding Azerbaijan’s close military and economic ties with Israel. Iran has accused Azerbaijan of facilitating Israeli intelligence operations, further complicating the relationship between the two nations.

Azerbaijan shares a significant border with Iran, approximately 700 kilometers long, which has been a focal point of security concerns. The drone technology employed in the attack reportedly has a range of up to 1,000 kilometers, with long-range versions capable of reaching up to 1,500 kilometers.

In light of the drone attack, Azerbaijan has vowed to respond, indicating that the situation may escalate further. The geopolitical implications of this incident are significant, as both countries navigate their relationships with regional powers, including Turkiye.

As the situation develops, the international community is closely monitoring the responses from both Azerbaijan and Iran. The potential for increased hostilities raises concerns about stability in the region.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact circumstances of the drone attack and the responses from both nations. The unfolding events highlight the fragile nature of relations in the South Caucasus, where historical grievances and current alliances play a crucial role.
