Bahrain’s Strategic Role Amidst Rising Tensions

On March 25, 2026

Key moments

In a significant development, Bahrain has emerged as a focal point in the Gulf region’s security landscape, particularly with its recent proposal for a U.N. resolution aimed at ensuring the safety of the Strait of Hormuz. This crucial waterway is vital for global oil supply, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it. The proposal comes amid rising tensions, particularly due to Iran’s actions that have effectively closed the strait, impacting international oil tanker traffic.

As Bahrain seeks to solidify its position, it faces opposition from major powers like China and Russia regarding its resolution. The urgency of this situation is underscored by the recent Iranian attack that resulted in the death of a civilian contractor and injuries to five Emirati personnel in Bahrain. Such incidents highlight the precarious security environment in which Bahrain operates.

Historically, Bahrain has been a strategic ally of the United Kingdom, which has established the UK Naval Support Facility (UKNSF) there to bolster Royal Navy operations across the Gulf. This military base not only signifies the UK’s commitment to the region but also reflects Bahrain’s importance as a hub for securing shipping lanes and ensuring freedom of navigation in a sensitive maritime area, as noted by the UK government.

Between 2012 and 2024, the UK exported a staggering £252 million in military equipment to Bahrain, including the sale of the BAE-manufactured Royal Navy patrol vessel, HMS Clyde, to the Bahraini navy in 2020. However, this military relationship has not been without controversy. During the 2011 uprisings, UK-made armoured personnel carriers were reportedly used by Saudi Arabian National Guard forces to suppress protests in Bahrain, leading to significant casualties.

The use of UK-supplied tear gas during these protests resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to around 300 others, raising serious concerns about human rights practices in Bahrain. Freedom House has characterized the nation as one of the Middle East’s most repressive states, a label that complicates its international partnerships.

In light of these challenges, figures like Lieutenant General Sir Graeme Lamb have been engaged in discussions about Bahrain’s international stance, emphasizing the need for a robust media campaign to bolster its image. Lamb received a £1.5 million contract from the Bahraini government in 2012, indicating the lengths to which Bahrain is willing to go to manage its narrative on the global stage.

As Bahrain navigates these complex dynamics, the reactions from the international community will be crucial. Former U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that the U.S. could manage the situation independently, suggesting a potential shift in the balance of power and influence in the region. Bahrain’s future actions and the responses from global powers will undoubtedly shape the geopolitical landscape of the Gulf.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of Bahrain’s recent proposals and military partnerships, but its role as a strategic ally in the Gulf is increasingly evident as tensions rise and the need for security becomes paramount.
