Barry Keoghan Takes on Role in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
Barry Keoghan has officially stepped into the role of Duke Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a position he has long aspired to achieve. His journey to this role is marked by a heartfelt Father’s Day text to Cillian Murphy, who plays the iconic Tommy Shelby.
In a recent interview, Keoghan recounted the moment he reached out to Murphy, stating, “I text him and said, ‘Happy Father’s Day’ and he got back and was like, ‘Do you want to play my son in the Peaky Blinders movie?’” This serendipitous exchange culminated in a role that resonates deeply with Keoghan, who has been trying to get a part in the series for years.
Keoghan’s character, Duke Shelby, reflects his own life experiences, particularly the theme of an absent father. He expressed, “It was such an emotional piece, being a dad myself and then having a father who was absent, I can entirely relate to that.” This personal connection adds a layer of authenticity to his performance.
In addition to his role in Peaky Blinders, Keoghan has garnered attention for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2023. He described the film Hamnet as “a beautiful film” and was visibly moved by Jessie Buckley’s performance, stating, “I couldn’t stop crying watching that movie.”
Currently, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is showing in selected cinemas and is set to be available on Netflix from March 20. Keoghan has also shared insights into his time on set, noting that he often played video games between scenes, creating a relaxed atmosphere among the cast.
He has formed strong bonds with his co-stars, referring to them as “like brothers” during the filming of the Beatles series. To enhance his character’s youthful appearance, Keoghan added gemstones to his costume, aiming to embody the essence of trying to be like Tommy Shelby.
As fans eagerly await the release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the film’s reception and its impact on Keoghan’s career remain to be seen. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any future projects he may be involved in following this role.
