“Hey John, so we’re heading back to the Cave of Bones in September, are you interested in coming?” This invitation from Sergio Schirato encapsulates the excitement surrounding the ongoing exploration of the Cave of Bones in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The cave, located in a remote area, has become a focal point for archaeologists and historians alike, revealing secrets that date back approximately 11,000 years.

During a recent expedition, a team of divers, archaeologists, and geologists recovered around 400 bones from the cave, including six additional human skulls. These findings have sparked interest not only for their age but also for the implications they hold regarding ancient burial rituals. The positioning of the bones suggests that the cave may have been used for such practices, offering a glimpse into the spiritual lives of those who lived long ago.

Among the remarkable discoveries was a fairly intact tapir skeleton, belonging to a species that went extinct over 8,000 years ago. “We scanned and recovered a fairly intact tapir skeleton, which on investigation turned out to be a species of tapir that went extinct over 8,000 years ago, and for which no complete skeleton existed (well, it does now),” noted a member of the expedition team.

The Cave of Bones is privately owned and has been used for recreational purposes by its landowners, but its archaeological significance cannot be overstated. The cave’s remote location, requiring a 1,400-kilometer drive and a 90-minute journey to the nearest town, adds to its allure and the challenges faced by researchers.

As the team prepares for their next expedition, the anticipation builds. The project aims to create a 3D photogrammetric model of the cave, which will help in documenting and analyzing the findings more effectively.

In a different realm of Brazilian exploration, Petrobras, the state-controlled oil giant, continues to dominate the offshore vessel market. “Petrobras remains the key player in the Brazilian market by far, with a US$78Bn E&P investment plan between 2026 and 2030,” stated Nicolas Garschagen, highlighting the company’s pivotal role in the region’s economic landscape.

Brazil is often described as the epicenter of the global offshore vessel demand, with 346 offshore support vessels currently active in its waters. This booming industry contrasts sharply with the ancient discoveries being made in places like the Cave of Bones, showcasing the diverse narratives that Brazil holds.

As researchers delve deeper into the cave’s mysteries, the stories of those who lived thousands of years ago continue to unfold, reminding us of the rich tapestry of history that shapes our present.
