“We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan,” said Brian May, disappointment evident in his voice. The iconic guitarist’s vision for Elstead village in Surrey hit a snag as the local council raised safety concerns.
Last year, May had donated 3,000 daffodil bulbs to the community, which bloomed unexpectedly in bright yellow at St James’ Church. This time, he aimed to plant more on the village green, a cherished space often filled with community events.
Yet the Elstead Parish Council had other ideas. They cited worries about sight lines for traffic—apparently, they believed that 18-inch daffodil stalks could obstruct views. May expressed confusion over this reasoning, wondering aloud how such short flowers could create an issue when a parked ice cream van nearby stood at 7 feet.
The council acknowledged the disappointment among residents who supported May’s daffodil planting initiative. “We fully understand that this will be disappointing,” they stated. Still, they emphasized their duty to balance community initiatives with safety and accessibility.
The council suggested alternative locations for planting, but May didn’t accept those options. He remains engaged with the community—his Instagram following of 3.6 million shows his influence and connection.
As he reflects on this setback, May hinted at potentially revisiting his plans for future daffodil projects. The beauty of nature and community spirit might yet bloom again in Elstead.
