BRICS Group calls for reform of the UN

On the final day of the BRICS summit the five major emerging economies called for the reform of the United Nations.

The group also denounced North Korea’s latest nuclear test and called for tougher measures against terrorist groups. It is believed that, following the denunciation of North Korea that BRICS would like a larger role on the world stage.

The five BRICS nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, also agreed and made a joint declaration that they would improve cooperation against a range of, what they describe as, terrorist groups. Some of these groups were based in Pakistan which could be seen as a diplomatic win for India.

In the declaration, the leaders said they would work together to improve global economic governance to foster “a more just and equitable international order.” it has been reported.

There was also an agreement that the group would oppose protectionism, a theme increasingly taken up by host Chinese President Xi Jinping as anti-globalization sentiment in the West poses a threat to China’s vast export markets.
