Major Flooding Incident on Caledonian Road: Emergency Response Underway
What Happened
A burst water main has caused significant flooding on Caledonian Road in north London. The incident, reported by the London Fire Brigade (LFB), involved a 30-inch pipe that ruptured, leading to flooding between Caledonian Road and Twyford Street, extending to the junction of Thornhill Bridge Wharf. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 14:45 GMT, with six fire engines and approximately 40 firefighters dispatched to manage the situation.
Why It Matters
The flooding has resulted in the closure of Caledonian Road in both directions between Bingfield Street and Stanmore Street, disrupting local traffic and affecting public transport services, including bus routes 17, 91, 259, 274, and N91. Basement homes have been inundated, prompting the establishment of a respite centre at the Islington Tennis Centre for displaced residents. Thames Water has acknowledged the issue, stating that their engineers were on-site shortly after 13:45 to isolate the damaged section of the pipe, stabilizing the water supply in the wider area.
What’s Next
As repairs continue, Thames Water has warned residents to expect low water pressure or complete outages in the vicinity. Local authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area due to anticipated traffic disruptions. Ongoing updates will be provided as the situation develops.
