Significant Changes in Call the Midwife
The season 15 finale of Call the Midwife marked the end of an era with the death of Sister Monica Joan and the closure of Nonnatus House’s maternity ward. This season concluded a total of 15 seasons since the show began in 2012.
In the finale, Sister Monica Joan succumbed to chronic kidney disease, a poignant moment that left many viewers emotional. Show creator Heidi Thomas remarked, “I shed more tears during the making of that episode than any other.” Additionally, the episode featured the marriage of Cyril and Rosalind, and Trixie Aylward accepted a role as Matron at the Lady Emily Clinic.
With the maternity unit’s closure, Sister Julienne announced that Nonnatus House will transition into a house of prayer and charity. The last birth at the maternity home was that of Belinda Mullucks, marking a significant milestone in the series.
Looking ahead, a prequel series and a movie are currently in development. The prequel will be a three-part mini-series set during the Blitz, showcasing younger versions of key characters. Meanwhile, the movie is set to take place overseas in 1972 and will include members of the current cast.
Season 16 has been confirmed but is not expected to air until Christmas 2028. Notably, there will not be a traditional Christmas special for season 16 in 2027, as stated by Thomas: “There won’t be a Christmas special next Christmas, not in the traditional mould.” However, actress Helen George reassured fans, “It is just a pause because we know it’s coming back.”
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact release date for season 16 and the specifics of the prequel series and movie, pending BBC confirmation. As the series continues to evolve, fans remain eager for more updates on their beloved characters and storylines.
