Chinese designers may not have bagged the top awards at the British Fashion Awards, but they stole the show in the New Creatives category.
The British Fashion Awards were held in the Royal Albert Hall in London last night in partnership with Swarovski. It brought together the year’s greatest influencers, designers, models, photographers, and brands to celebrate the people and brands that have made an impact.
Gucci, Balenciaga, and Dame Vivienne Westwood took home the big prizes but up and coming brands managed to bag a few of the awards. Off-White won the Urban Luxe award for redefining “the way ‘sportswear’ is perceived across the globe, elevating ‘casual’ to high end and directional fashion.”
Caroline Rush, BFC Chief Executive commented: “The Fashion Awards in partnership with Swarovski is a celebration of an incredibly diverse industry; through the event we aim to shine a light not only on designers but also on all of those who contribute to the creativity and innovation of our industry.
A new addition to awards was the NEW WAVE: Creatives segment which celebrates the most innovative and inspiring young creative talents across the world. The first 40 creatives in this category were announced in Shanghai at the beginning of October.
Rush said: “We are delighted to be launching NEW WAVE: Creatives this year, to highlight and celebrate creatives from all around the world, to inspire new collaborations and to encourage an even younger generation to consider the many creative roles that make up the fashion industry and follow in their footsteps.”
One of the NEW WAVE: Creatives is Chinese fashion stylist Fil Xiaobai. She has over 3 million followers of Chinese social media and has been described as “a cool girl” who “turns heads”.
Xiaobai told Monki that she thinks “facing styling is a way to express yourself. IT’s just like with writing, drawing and singing.” She’s dedicated to her work which makes her come across as a serious person but she play’s just as hard.
Fashion makes her feel empowered and being included in the creatives list will only boost her feeling of empowerment.
She said: “when you feel confident about you do, when you are really good at what you do, you feel empowered.”
