Claires stores: Claire’s Stores Close After Three Decades in the UK
Claire’s has shut down all its UK stores, marking the end of its three-decade presence on British high streets. With the closure of 154 standalone stores, more than 1,000 employees now face redundancy.
As of April 27, 2026, all trading ceased. A spokesman from Kroll confirmed, “All standalone Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland have ceased trading.” The overall job losses tallied to around 1,300, a staggering figure for a brand once synonymous with fashion accessories.
Founded in Chicago in 1961 and making its UK debut in 1996, Claire’s was a staple for many young shoppers. But it struggled—sales plummeted as competition from online retailers like Amazon and TikTok intensified. The brand collapsed into administration earlier this year.
The closures include several locations across Essex—Braintree, Chelmsford, Romford—each now left with vacant storefronts where vibrant displays once attracted customers.
While all standalone stores have closed, Claire’s still operates 356 concession outlets within Asda stores. This means some customers can still find their favorite accessories without venturing far from their local supermarket.
Yet, even with these concessions remaining open, the future of Claire’s brand in the UK is unclear. Officials have not confirmed any plans for recovery or potential rebranding.
The company’s website has also paused operations—preventing online purchases and leaving loyal customers in limbo. Many will wonder where they’ll turn for affordable accessories that were once so easily accessible.
In this shifting retail landscape, observers are keenly watching how landlords will respond. Kroll noted that “an interested party is in discussion with a number of landlords with a view to taking new leases for some of the sites.” Could this mean a revival or adaptation for Claire’s?
For now, though, the stark reality remains: a beloved high street name has vanished from view—and with it, over a thousand jobs lost in the process. The echoes of laughter and chatter that once filled those aisles will soon fade into memory.
