Corinthians has faced multiple financial disputes and transfer bans in recent years, creating a challenging environment for the club. In a significant development, the Brazilian football club has recently paid Shakhtar Donetsk R$ 5.4 million to clear the loan fee owed for player Maycon. This payment was part of an agreement signed back in December 2022, aimed at resolving ongoing financial issues.
The urgency of this payment was underscored by a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which mandated that Corinthians settle the debt within 45 days of notification. This ruling came as the club was already grappling with other financial obligations, including an outstanding amount of R$ 2.4 million owed to Shakhtar from a previous deal involving Pedrinho in 2021.
Corinthians’ financial landscape is complex, with the club also expecting to receive around 130,000 euros in August through FIFA’s solidarity mechanism. This payment is crucial as it will help the club manage its debts more effectively. The CAS ruling highlighted a breach of article 12 of FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, further complicating Corinthians’ situation.
In addition to settling the debt with Shakhtar, Corinthians has been active in addressing other financial commitments. The club recently lifted a FIFA registration ban after paying Santos Laguna R$ 41.6 million for player Félix Torres. Moreover, they have settled an approximately R$ 41 million debt to Matías Rojas in two installments, showcasing their commitment to resolving outstanding financial issues.
However, challenges remain. Open cases include about R$ 8 million owed to Philadelphia Union for José Martínez and R$ 6.26 million owed to Midtjylland for Charles. These debts illustrate the ongoing financial strain that Corinthians is under as they work to stabilize their operations.
As observers look to the future, it is clear that Corinthians must continue to navigate these financial challenges carefully. The club’s management has expressed a commitment to resolving outstanding debts and improving their financial health. With the recent payment to Shakhtar, there is cautious optimism that Corinthians is on the right path toward recovery.
