“Developing an exciting and deliverable replacement for the Assembly Rooms has been a long time coming and we know how frustrating this journey has been for residents – I have shared this frustration and welcome the opportunity to enter into a contract with our preferred development partners,” said Councillor Nadine Peatfield, reflecting the community’s eagerness for progress in Derby.

As Derby City Council prepares to appoint Vinci UK Developments and Ion Developments as partners for the Market Place redevelopment, the city is buzzing with anticipation not only for urban renewal but also for the upcoming Good Friday Derby. Scheduled for April 3, 2026, this match marks the 250th meeting between local rivals Hull FC and Hull KR, a milestone that adds to the excitement.

Tickets for this historic encounter are already on sale, exclusively for 2026 members, with prices set at £30 for adults, £25 for concessions, and £15 for juniors. Infants aged 0-3 can attend for free, provided they have a match ticket.

In a separate but equally alarming incident, Derbyshire police reported that a man was arrested after a car hit multiple pedestrians, leaving some seriously injured. “Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public,” the police stated, emphasizing their commitment to community safety.

Catherine Atkinson, a local resident, expressed her concern, saying, “My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services.” This incident has understandably cast a shadow over the community, with a section of Friar Gate expected to remain closed for some time.

Meanwhile, the planning application for the Market Place redevelopment is set to be considered by the Council’s Planning Control Committee later this spring, paving the way for significant changes in the area. Steve Parry, a representative from the development team, noted, “We are looking forward to progressing through the various stages of the development process, including securing planning consent which will enable the demolition of Assembly Rooms and multi-storey car park, to be implemented.”

The demolition of the Assembly Rooms is expected to take around 12 months to complete once started, a development that many residents are eagerly awaiting.

As the derby approaches, the community’s spirit remains high, with fans looking forward to celebrating their local teams in what promises to be a thrilling match. The blend of sports excitement and urban development encapsulates a moment of hope and renewal for Derby.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding further developments in both the sporting and urban landscapes, but the anticipation continues to build as the date draws near.
