E.ON Next Announces Lower Standing Charge Tariff Trial: What We Know
What Happened
E.ON Next has announced a new initiative to offer a lower standing charge tariff to selected customers as part of a limited 12-month trial. This decision follows Ofgem’s recent directive requiring energy suppliers to provide lower standing charge options to their customers.
Why It Matters
The trial aims to enhance customer choice regarding energy tariffs and to evaluate the potential benefits and impacts of a lower standing charge. A previous trial conducted by E.ON Next in 2024 revealed that a significant portion of participants, particularly high consumption customers, could have benefited from alternative tariffs. Notably, 90% of these customers opted to remain on the lower standing charge tariff even when informed of potentially cheaper options.
What’s Next
Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Next, emphasized the importance of monitoring this trial closely to ensure customers are not adversely affected. The company anticipates that lower usage customers may particularly benefit from this trial, as their daily standing charges often represent a substantial portion of their energy bills.
