Eilish McColgan: A Gritty 7th Place Finish at the London Marathon

What drives an athlete to push through unimaginable pain? Eilish McColgan answered that question on April 26, 2026, when she crossed the finish line of the London Marathon in 7th place—her foot bloodied and blistered, yet her spirit unbroken.

McColgan clocked a time of 2:24:51, just 26 seconds shy of her personal best. It’s a remarkable feat considering she suffered a severe foot injury halfway through the race. “Just not long after halfway, I had a really, really bad blister in my foot. It sounds strange saying it, but the only way I can say it is I felt like my foot just exploded,” she shared, reflecting on the moment that could have derailed her entire run.

In an elite women’s race filled with fierce competition, McColgan emerged as the top British finisher. She not only secured a spot among the best but also earned gold medals for both British and Scottish athletics. Yet, despite her accolades, she felt disappointment creeping in. “I’m just disappointed with how my body sort of held up there,” she admitted.

As she navigated through 26 miles of grueling terrain, pain surged through her body—first in her foot, then radiating elsewhere. “I just started to hurt in different areas then as well. So I don’t know if I’m like running funny through it, I assume,” she explained. The marathon’s ideal conditions had spurred record performances from others; Weynay Ghebresilasie set a new Scottish record in the men’s race with a time of 2:06:59, while Sebastian Sawe broke the world record with an astonishing 1:59:30.

McColgan’s journey doesn’t end here. As a four-time Olympian and daughter of British running star Liz McColgan, she’s no stranger to challenges or expectations. Her grit reflects not just her athletic prowess but also a legacy that looms large over Scottish athletics.

Yet there are uncertainties ahead. How will this injury impact her future races? Will she recover in time for upcoming events? For now, McColgan stands as a testament to resilience—a reminder that sometimes finishing is winning.
