Farne Islands

The breeding season is always a special time of year as our ranger teams gear up to monitor the birds daily over the spring and summer months, said Laura Knowles.

This year, the National Trust has switched on its beloved Puffin Cam once again, inviting viewers to witness the antics of around 200,000 seabirds—including puffins, Arctic terns, guillemots, and kittiwakes—on the stunning Farne Islands. The live stream captivated over 250,000 viewers last year, creating a bridge between nature and those who may never visit.

But this season comes with a heavy heart. The islands have faced devastating losses due to bird flu outbreaks. In 2022 alone, over 6,000 dead birds were recorded; in 2023, that number was still alarmingly high at more than 3,500. “We’ve been closely monitoring the impact of bird flu as part of international research into the disease,” shared Sophia Jackson, highlighting ongoing efforts to understand this crisis.

Rangers will conduct bird counts next month to assess the full impact of bird flu and storms on these vital populations. Storms Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra wreaked havoc along the Atlantic coast of the UK and Europe, further complicating wildlife conservation efforts. As Knowles noted earlier, the breeding season is crucial; every count matters.

Key points about this year’s Puffin Cam:

  • The live cameras are now active for the breeding season.
  • Visitor boats have reopened for the season on the Farne Islands.
  • The National Trust plans to take Puffin Cam on a UK tour as part of their Window to the Wild project.

Yet even amidst these challenges, there’s hope. “We don’t yet know what this means for the puffin and other seabirds which are returning to breed on the Farnes this year,” said Ben McCarthy. The uncertainty looms large over these islands that have been cared for by the National Trust for over 100 years.

As we look ahead, annual seabird counts will be completed in June to assess both population numbers and health conditions. Conservationists remain vigilant—every effort counts in protecting these enchanting seabirds and their fragile habitat.
