Fleetwood Town Secures Narrow Victory Against Walsall
Fleetwood Town clinched a 1-0 victory over Walsall at Bescot Stadium, with Mark Helm netting the only goal of the match in the 15th minute. This win marks Fleetwood’s second consecutive away victory in League Two.
Helm’s goal came after a well-timed assist from Ethan Ennis, and the referee, Steven Copeland, allowed an advantage that led to the scoring opportunity. Despite several chances, Walsall struggled to find the back of the net, continuing their home woes.
Walsall has now gone six matches without a win at home, managing to score only twice since Boxing Day. Their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities was evident, particularly when Daniel Kanu missed a chance shortly after Helm’s goal.
Fleetwood’s defense, led by goalkeeper Jay Lynch, held firm against Walsall’s pressure throughout the match. Lynch made several crucial saves, contributing significantly to the clean sheet. Mitch Clark, who joined Fleetwood on loan from Port Vale last month, praised the team’s determination and defensive performance.
“It was a really hard fought victory,” Clark stated after the match. He added, “One nil away from home, clean sheet, you take that all day long.” The player also noted that Fleetwood is currently eight points off the playoff positions, indicating the team’s aspirations for the season.
Fleetwood Town started the match strong, showing good form for the first 20-25 minutes. Ennis nearly doubled the lead when he grazed the bar with a header in the 16th minute, just moments after Helm’s goal.
As Walsall continued to press for an equalizer, Fleetwood’s defense remained resolute, ensuring that the scoreline stayed intact. The victory is a significant boost for Fleetwood as they look to build momentum.
Looking ahead, Fleetwood Town will travel to Gillingham for their next match, where they will aim to continue their winning streak. The team’s recent performances have instilled a sense of belief among the players, as expressed by Clark, who said, “There’s definitely belief.”
