At Manchester Airport, chaos reigned on April 20, 2026. Major airlines struggled as 23 flights were cancelled and 483 delayed—leaving travelers stranded and frustrated.
Aer Lingus flight EI3611 to Belfast City was among the casualties, scheduled for an 08:40 departure but ultimately cancelled. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways flight QR22 to Doha faced a delay of 1 hour and 28 minutes, finally taking off at 09:43.
Wizz Air’s flight to Liverpool didn’t fare much better, departing nearly an hour late at 09:04. Ryanair’s FR3206 to Rome Ciampino was delayed by 42 minutes, while Jet2’s LS801 to Venice left at 08:42 instead of its planned time.
The ripple effects were evident. Ryanair’s FR1249 to Tenerife was estimated to take off two hours late—scheduled for 14:20 but pushed back to 16:25.
The disruptions stem from broader issues in the airline industry. Global air travel remains severely disrupted due to the Iran war, which has forced the closure of major Middle Eastern hubs.
Aer Lingus has announced it will cancel around 500 flights due to mandatory maintenance on aircraft. An Aer Lingus spokesperson stated, “A number of recent cancellations have been required due to mandatory maintenance on aircraft, along with a limited number of schedule adjustments.”
Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s CEO, expressed concern about the ongoing situation: “We’re all facing an unknown scenario. And we are certainly looking at maybe having to cancel 5 percent, 10 percent of flights through May, June and July.”
Even Air Canada is adjusting its schedules—”As jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict… we are making schedule adjustments accordingly,” said a spokesperson.
Travelers are left in limbo as they wait for updates on their flights. Details remain unconfirmed regarding how long these disruptions might last or if further cancellations are on the horizon.
