The UK is gearing up for a tough summer as two million airline seats vanish from schedules, driven by skyrocketing jet fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Airlines are already feeling the pinch. In May alone, about 13,000 fewer flights will operate worldwide after recent cancellations. Lufthansa has slashed 20,000 short-haul flights through its CityLine subsidiary. The price of jet fuel has more than doubled since the US-Israel attack on Iran, leaving many airlines scrambling to adjust.
The situation is exacerbated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has cut off around 30% of Europe’s aviation fuel shipments. As the largest net importer of jet fuel in Europe, the UK is particularly vulnerable. Observers predict that if this crisis drags on, more cuts should be expected.
Key statistics:
- 130 million seats available in May among global airlines
- 132 million seats available in April among global airlines
- 800% increase in jet fuel shipments to Northern Europe from North America
- 10-15% rise in ticket costs predicted if fuel rationing occurs
- 70% recovery of lost production estimated three months after Hormuz reopens
The UK government has relaxed ‘use-it-or-lose-it’ slot rules, allowing airlines to cancel flights without losing their rights. This flexibility might help carriers navigate the turbulent waters ahead. Yet, Bryan Terry from Allianz Trade warns that reaching a stage of fuel rationing would force airlines into a world of trade-offs—where choices become limited and costly.
Despite these challenges, Airlines UK maintains that operations continue normally without significant issues regarding jet fuel supply. But with soaring prices and potential shortages looming large over the UK aviation market, many remain skeptical about how long this stability can last.
The long-term impact of the Middle East conflict on jet fuel supply and flight operations remains unclear. As airlines adjust their schedules to cope with ongoing shortages, passengers may need to brace for more disruptions ahead.
