Fuel Prices Update: Current Trends and Government Actions

On March 9, 2026

Current Fuel Prices

Fuel prices in the UK have reached notable levels, with petrol currently priced at 137.51p per litre and diesel approaching £1.51 per litre. These figures reflect ongoing volatility in the market, influenced by various global factors.

Brent Crude Oil and Government Actions

Brent Crude Oil prices have peaked at around $120 (approximately £89), contributing to the rising costs at the pump. In response to these challenges, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced an extension of the 5p per litre cut in fuel duty for an additional five months, ensuring that fuel duty will not increase in line with inflation this year.

Market Vigilance and Expert Opinions

The Competition and Markets Authority has been instructed to remain vigilant regarding fuel prices, as experts express concern over the current trends. Reeves stated, “The way to keep fuel prices low was rapid de-escalation,” emphasizing the need for proactive measures.

Howard Cox, an industry expert, warned, “I predicted last week when I was on your show that we’re going to hit over $100 (£75) and that will put something like 20p per litre onto a filling up,” highlighting the potential impact of rising oil prices on consumers.

Gas Prices on the Rise

In addition to fuel prices, gas prices have also surged, increasing from 78p/therm to 161p/therm within a week. Simon Cran-McGreehin noted that while gas prices are still below the record highs seen after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the current rate of increase is concerning.

Petrol and diesel prices peaked across the UK in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, setting a precedent for the current volatility. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as the government continues to implement measures aimed at alleviating the financial burden on motorists.

Looking Ahead

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how effective these government interventions will be in stabilizing fuel prices. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further measures that may be introduced to address the ongoing challenges faced by consumers.
