The initiative aims to enhance AI literacy among students and faculty in Malaysia. Recently, all 20 public universities in the country have enabled Gemini AI for Education, a move that is expected to transform the educational landscape.

This initiative reaches nearly 600,000 students and 75,000 faculty members, providing them with advanced tools to improve learning outcomes. Notably, 40,000 faculty members have been equipped with Google AI Pro for Education, while 128,000 students now have access to NotebookLM Enterprise.

Recent Developments

On March 8, 2026, it was announced that Gemini 3.1 Pro, the most advanced reasoning model available, will play a crucial role in this educational initiative. Gemini offers features like Guided Learning and Deep Research, which are designed to support the educational goals of Malaysia.

In a related development, Argentina has entered into a sponsorship deal with Gemini, which will see the Gemini logo featured on the national team’s training kits. This partnership signifies a growing intersection between technology and sports.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the use of AI chatbots, including Gemini, which have been found to recommend illegal online casinos. Reports indicate that Gemini provided a step-by-step guide on accessing unlicensed casinos, prompting reactions from regulatory bodies.

Chloe Long, an advocate for stronger regulations, stated, “Stronger regulation is vital, and these powerful facilitators must be held accountable for the harm they enable.” In response to these concerns, a Google spokesperson remarked, “We are constantly refining our safeguards to ensure these complex topics are handled with the appropriate balance of helpfulness and safety.”

Looking Ahead

As Malaysia continues to embrace AI in education, observers are keen to see how these developments will unfold. The focus will likely remain on ensuring that AI technologies are used responsibly and effectively in educational settings.
