GoFundMe Campaign Launched for Families Defrauded by Roofer Richard Williams

“I don’t know what it is with these small women, they just go like a banshee straight away,” said Richard Williams, reflecting on the impact of his actions. Williams was sentenced to 32 months in prison for defrauding 16 families in Wirral through unfinished roofing contracts between 2019 and 2023, amounting to a total fraud of £75,840.

In response to the financial devastation caused by Williams, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise £18,000 to compensate the affected families. As of the latest report, the fundraiser has garnered £125 from nine donations, indicating a slow start in support.

Susie Laughland, a close friend of one of the victims, stated, “I am fundraising on behalf of my close friend who lost over £20,000 to a rogue roofer.” This sentiment echoes the feelings of many who have been left in financial distress due to Williams’ fraudulent activities.

One victim, Janine, expressed her frustration, saying, “He stole my peace of mind and the dream I was building in my home.” Such statements highlight the emotional toll that these financial crimes have inflicted on the families involved.

In a separate but related context, Sammy-Jo Luxton has also turned to GoFundMe for help, having faced multiple cancellations of her NHS surgery appointments due to stage-four endometriosis. She has set up a campaign for private treatment, reflecting the growing reliance on crowdfunding platforms for urgent medical needs.

The average time to receive a diagnosis for endometriosis in the UK is nine years and four months, underscoring the challenges many face in accessing timely medical care.

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding potential fraudulent activities on GoFundMe itself. A case involving an individual named Tina, who allegedly misused her fundraising page for medical bills related to cancer, has sparked discussions about the integrity of such platforms.

Dear Abby, a well-known advice columnist, urged readers to report any suspected fraud, stating, “If you sincerely think Tina has been abusing her GoFundMe page, report it.” This highlights the importance of vigilance within the crowdfunding community.

As the GoFundMe campaign for the Wirral families continues, community support will be crucial in helping those affected recover from their losses. The next steps for the fundraiser will be closely monitored as it seeks to reach its target amount.
