On April 14, 2026
ian huntley — GB news

Ian Huntley, the man infamous for the abduction and murder of 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, died on March 7, 2026, at the age of 52. He succumbed to a blunt head injury sustained during an attack at HMP Frankland, where he was serving a life sentence for his heinous crimes.

The attack occurred on February 26, 2026, when Huntley was struck multiple times over the head with a metal bar by another inmate, Anthony Russell, 43, who has since been charged with his murder. Huntley was placed on life support following the assault but ultimately could not recover.

Bradley King, a spokesperson, confirmed the details of the attack, stating, “I understand the circumstances to be that Mr. Huntley was struck over the head multiple times by another prisoner with an object described as a metal bar.” Huntley, born on January 31, 1974, in Grimsby, was convicted in 2003 and sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison.

The tragic case of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who were abducted in 2002, shocked the nation. The search for the girls lasted 13 days and involved around 400 police officers. Their families have continued to feel the weight of their loss, with Leslie Chapman, Jessica’s father, reflecting, “I think he was a timebomb waiting to go off, and both our girls were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

In the wake of Huntley’s death, his body was formally identified on the same day, and a postmortem examination was conducted by Dr. Jennifer Bolton. Observers note that Huntley’s ashes will be scattered privately by his family, marking a somber end to a life filled with infamy.

As the legal proceedings continue, Anthony Russell is scheduled to appear at Newcastle crown court on April 24 for a pre-trial preparation hearing. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full circumstances surrounding the attack and its aftermath.
